Course outline

The Diploma of Music is a pathway program designed to help you transition into the Bachelor of Music. You’ll develop foundational knowledge and skills in a supportive learning environment, setting you up for success in your future studies. Situated in Queensland’s vibrant cultural precinct, the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University at South Bank is acoustically and architecturally unparalleled in Australia. Study with a community of like-minded peers as you learn from award-winning music educators and benefit from the Queensland Conservatorium’s strong partnerships with local cultural institutions. You’ll study academic foundations courses to develop a strong foundation in topics like exploring music, performance study, ‘my life as a musician’, as well as studio courses, and where relevant, Conservatorium Ensemble Studies, with additional support and access to a dedicated First Year Coordinator and Peer-Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) run by high-achieving students. Majors

When you commence the Bachelor of Music in second year, you will be able to choose from the following majors: composition; creative music technology; education preparation (classroom); education preparation (instrumental); music studies; performance; popular music.

Combined diploma/degrees

Upon successful completion of this diploma, you will be offered guaranteed entry into the second year of the Bachelor of Music.

Prerequisites

Applicants must meet the minimum age requirements for admission, see the QTAC website for details.; Audition/ Folio (Folio is required for Composition and Creative Music Technology only)

Fixed closing date

Applicants must apply to QTAC, pay their audition fee and submit their phase one video recorded audition or Folio and Artistic Statement to Griffith University by 6 September 2023 to be guaranteed an audition in the first audition round. Applicants who wish to apply after this date may be considered in subsequent audition and offer rounds should places still be available. Late applicants should refer to the Auditions website for information.

Additional entry requirements

Admission to this program requires applicants to submit a video recorded audition and Artistic Statement as the first phase of a two-phase process. For performance specialisations, phase two will require you to attend an audition and interview. The phase one component for composition and creative music technology specialisations requires the submission of a Folio and Artistic Statement, and for phase two you will be required to attend an interview. Visit the Griffith University website for details of audition requirements including how to pay for audition fees, submit your video recorded audition or Folio and Artistic Statement to the Queensland Conservatorium by 6 September 2023. Applicants should also refer to the Auditions website for the most up to date advice and messaging. Phase two auditions will take place at the Queensland Conservatorium, South Bank from 25 – 29 September 2023. Griffith University will commence making offers on 17 November 2023, however additional auditions and offers may be considered in subsequent rounds should places still be available. Applicants must ensure they order their preferences accordingly; refer to the QTAC website. Applicants must nominate their specialisation/s on their QTAC application and pay the $50 non-refundable audition fee to Griffith University for each specialisation (i.e. if applying for different instrument/vocal/composition/folio you will be required to attend multiple auditions and pay multiple audition fees).
Audition specialisations are:
Classical specialisations:
Strings: violin, viola, cello, double bass, guitar, harp, viola da gamba.
Woodwind: flute, oboe, clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, recorder, pan pipe.
Brass: french horn, trumpet, trombone, bass trombone, tuba, soprano cornet, cornet, flugel horn, tenor horn, baritone horn, euphonium.
Keyboard: piano, pipe organ, harpsichord.
Percussion: Classical percussion and timpani.
Classical voice.
Jazz specialisations: instrumental: jazz saxophone, jazz clarinet, jazz flute, jazz trumpet, jazz trombone, jazz violin, jazz piano, jazz guitar, jazz bass, jazz drums, jazz vibraphone. Jazz Voice.
Popular Music specialisations:
Instrumental: Piano/keyboard, drums, electric bass guitar, guitar.
